Uber Technologies Inc suspended its pilot program for driverless cars on Saturday after a vehicle equipped with the nascent technology crashed on an Arizona roadway, the ride-hailing company and local police said.
The accident, the latest involving a self-driving vehicle operated by one of several companies experimenting with autonomous vehicles, caused no serious injuries, Uber said.
Even so, the company said it was grounding driverless cars involved in a pilot program in Arizona, Pittsburgh and San Francisco pending the outcome of investigation into the crash on Friday evening in Tempe.

I look forward to the results of the accident investigation. I would guess that the victim is at least partially at fault.
Either way, I believe that self driving cars are not perfect. But they are better than human driven cars.

But they are better than human driven cars. Optimism is always welcome but it may not be of practical value in this instance. I agree about the 'perfect' part of your comment about self-driven cars, but I disagree about them being 'better' than human driven cars for the following reason: In analytical psychology, four psychological functions are present in the human psyche: thinking, feeling, intuition, and sensation. Two of these are missing in the self-driving cars. That means they are driving with 1/2 of a brain.  Therefore, the rate of accidents for that of self-driving cars will probably be higher than for human-driven cars. |

Add this to the mix: Computers are not conscious beings. Everything is based upon pure logic. That means they have no capacity for wisdom, whether it be conventional or divine. Surely a nightmare for the insurance companies....and, of course, the accident victims who may find it difficult to 'forgive' a machine.   |

Surely a nightmare for the insurance companies I believe it's the converse. A "driver" with no distractions, microsecond reflexes, multiple sensors and cold logic is an insurance company's dream come true. The nightmare is the driver with teen hormones, dementia, poor vision, a drinking problem, sleep deprivation, poor concentration, distracted by social media. |

But have you ever seen a woman putting on her make-up while driving?---simply amazing! Or, have you ever seen the driver along side of you reading a book while waiting for the light to change? Would a computer be able to do that? |

The good thing about this accident is that it should be really easy to determine the cause. The self driving car had video recording and high tech sensors so all the facts about the accident have been recorded.
It's very likely the victim was at fault. The car did not slow down significantly which suggests the victim did not enter its path until the last seconds.
