We have some Aldi here too, although they're not much faster than any other grocery store. (We also have some LIDL here, but I haven't been in one yet.) Our Trader Joe's (The owners of Aldi (Albrecht family) bought them some time ago, but had the good sense not to change what worked) was that fast back before scanners; my impression was that when they got scanners that actually slowed them down, although it avoided the need for putting price tags on individual items, and simplified inventory and ordering, so they were still worth having. They hire a lot of college kids serious about working their way through college, but also people a decade or two older that work as hard; seems like it's a pleasant if intense place to work, decent benefits for retail work (by our standards), etc. And some independent small convenience stores were even faster without a scanner, because their cashiers knew every item in the store and its current price (by unit or if applicable, by weight) - and weren't slowed by old registers that didn't figure change, because they counted it back the old fashioned way.
