It would seem that many here believe that school gun violence is caused by someone that is mentally ill/or emotionally disturbed. I for one find that to be a reasonable assumption as it is difficult to believe there would be some logical motivation for a sane individual to commit such an act. Rather than arm teachers with the hope that they may prevent a future occurrence, I would suggest that there is room for some administrative control that could be implemented at state level to reduce/prevent a firearm being sold to an individual suspected of being mentally ill/or emotionally disturbed. Perhaps a 30 day wait period is needed to do a more thorough background check jointly by local, state police and FBI. Where a person is suspect of being mentally unfit then a clearance by a medical authority must be provided to police before approval to purchase a weapon is granted. The approval to purchase could be in the form of a licence which is needed to be presented to an authorized firearms dealer before a sale can be made.
It would be reasonable for a license fee to be charged to conduct the background check and issue the licence. This is not fool proof as it would not prevent illegal sale of firearms. This would necessitate development of different measures to reduce the business of illegal sales.
I believe that controls designed to inhibit or eliminate occurrence of guns getting into the hands of mentally unstable persons is something that even the NRA would not oppose.

IF ONE WANTS A GUN BAD ENOUGH ONE CAN BUY MOST ANYWHERE , BAD PEOPLE DO NOT OBEY RULES OR LAWS , PEOPLE CAN STOP PEOPLE , ALL THE CHECKS WILL NOT STOP MOST KILLERS , THIS KID BOUGHT 5 AS LEGAL BUT IF HE WAS NOT SOLD ONE HE WOULD HAVE FOUND A WAY , BOOK IT , PLEASE TEACH THE CHILDREN THAT GUN LAWS ARE MADE BY PEOPLE NOT THE MAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE .

Yes, indeed..."happiness is a warm gun" The creed of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth----that's what makes the world go 'round (besides money). THE LONE RANGER NEVER KILLED , HE ONLY WINGED THE BAD GUY , YOU REMEMBER THEY USED CAP GUNS BTW , MY DENTIST NEVER LET ME TAKE HIS TOOTH

There may be no way to stop the mentally ill from acts . We can't stop mental illness. But we can stop guns from getting into their hands. We don't have to go as far as the Japanese but we can do more background checks.

We could add this to your analysis: Today's climate is highly charged with politics in every sector of public life. This fact could even make it difficult to make an 'objective' assessment of who is emotionally or mentally fit to own a weapon. The former Soviet Union comes to mind, wherein the government had its own psychiatrists who decided who was sane and who wasn't. The 'insane' (political enemies) landed in state run sanitoriums (prisons).

We don't have to go as far as the Japanese but we can do more background checks. Add this: The Japanese culture is a homogeneous one, unlike American culture which is culturally diverse. In the Japanese culture, conformity is the rule. As Beachguy has suggested, we may have to live with gun violence, until our culture changes, if ever. Accepting the way things are that are of this world, and cannot change, is Wisdom. In the meantime, we can keep our sense of humor. We'll need it.

Check out how many killings would have stopped in the Windy City if guns were outlawed , very few as the black market would be booming , some will just not have a background check , it's elementary

In america the $$$$ rules , law makers will not make a law if they think they will lose votes an $$$$$ , Hitler would have you killed if wearing glasses thinking you may be reading and getting wisdom or knowledge , how many Germans or Jews had a gun ?

TAKE A TIME MACHINE BACK TO SAY 1900 TO BAN GUNS UNLESS ONLY HAVING A RIGHT GIVEN BY YOUR GOVERNMENT TO KEEP THE PEOPLE SAFE , PERHAPS IT MAY HAVE WORKED UNTIL THE LAW BREAKERS FOUND A WAY TO GET TONS OF GUNS

we may have to live with gun violence, until our culture changes Exactly. It's not that we can't stop gun violence, it's that we don't want to.

"We" refers to the American electorate. Ah, the electorate: as fickle and divided as congress. Good luck.
