The only gun control that's legitimate is self-control and accuracy. Legitimacy is entire subjective. I'm interested in what works, as objectively measured by comparing our gun death rates with other developed countries. The system we have has clearly not been working for decades. We need to try something different. I'm not interested in that definition of "what works". First, aside from a bump in the last three years or so, our per capita rate is down...for us. Second, I'd put liberty far ahead of any "greatest good for the greatest number" concerns that might be suggested by such numbers as you refer to. Anyway, 2/3 of firearms deaths are suicides; who's to say most wouldn't find another way.

Gun free zones seems to be a good place to start since it seems to be more and advertisement than actually accomplishing anything. Public executions of first degree murderers. Like in "Blazing Saddles", sort of a picnic/entertainment affair.

We need to try something different. Ok. I was hoping to continue avoiding the ugly truth with the same old appeal to 'the rights of man' sort of argument. That argument, though valid, is not working. So here comes the ugly truth. And it IS ugly. In America roughly 50% of the firearm murders and shootings (a shooting is when someone is shot but not killed) happen in 2% of the nations counties. Within those counties there are vast discrepancies between postal codes and neighborhoods. Black and Latino neighborhoods are dangerous. Black people comprise about 13% of America's population. Black males are half that percentage or 6.5%. Of that six point five percent, less than half again are in the prime 15 to 35 year old range for active criminality. Black males in the prime criminal age group comprise about 3% of the U.S. population. They are responsible for 50% of firearm murders in the U.S. Mexican Americans were not categorized as a separate ethnicity from Caucasian in the annual FBI uniform crime report issued annually about two years behind any current year. More specifically they were not categorized as Hispanic if they were perpetrators, they were categorized as White. They WERE however categorized as Hispanic if they were victims. On the form for the FBI crime report there are spaces to check for race/ethnicity. There were no Hispanic boxes to check on the perp side but there were Hispanic boxes to check on the victim side. I read this has been corrected recently but I haven't verified that. That means if two Mexican Nationals cross the border each evening to deal drugs for the night and get into a shootout and kill each other, the FBI crime report would indicate two Caucasian males murdered two Hispanic males. Have fun with that one. It's true. If the firearm crime statistics are corrected for race and only European American males are counted for murder rates, the U.S. has about the same murder rate (incidents per number of people) as Great Britain or The Netherlands. EDIT TO ADD: The British and European crime rates, including murder, is catching up with the American crime rates. They are importing Sub Saharan Blacks and North African Muslims. In Britain you will be arrested and jailed for complaining about this democide. Please do not believe this last fact. Check it out for yourself. White American firearm owners are very responsible people in the aggregate. Our minority races/ethnicities are not. I told you it was ugly. I'm telling you it's the truth.

Ben - you remind me of someone from the old Amazon forum. His name was odd-something, might have been "oddjob". Are you him? If so, you need to give me an update on your kidney stones. This is Oddjob and I am not him:

We could try a dictatorship. Anyone up for it? Dictatorship, Kingdom, Oligarchy, Democracy or Republic. Humans have never shown the capacity for good governance beyond a century or so of certain 'Golden Ages' before falling into tyranny. I'm Christian. I look forward to Christ's return to run this place. F anyone who has a problem with my belief but I'll happily and courteously discuss it with any polite fan who wishes to agree or disagree POLITELY.

I do not think that leaving things status quo concerning limiting who can and cannot have a firearm is sufficient to satisfy the next two generations of voters. I believe that the young people close to voting age are going to be felt later this year and certainly by 2020. There are a heck of a lot of school teens plus their relatives that are going to persuade current politicians to consider change in gun control legislation or change their job. Any politician that accepts campaign funds directly or indirectly from the NRA ought to dust off their resume cause their days in office are numbered. The 2nd amendment written in 1791 did not envision that people needed weapons to defend themselves against themselves but rather from an invading force. It certainly did not envision the ownership of assault weapons, solely designed to kill people, to be used by mentally disturbed and criminal elements within their own society. It is too late to remove guns from ownership but it is high time that some restrictions are needed around the type of weapon that can be owned and by whom.
Bottom line is that status quo is unacceptable and things will change I believe sooner than later.

Thanks for the link. This is the LAPD report cited: assets.lapdonline.org/assets/pdf/2017-homi-report-final.pdfPage 9 is the key. Both suspects and victims are much more likely to be black, with low income and low education. That's hardly a surprise. Blacks have much lower income and education than whites and Asians. And people who are poor and uneducated find it impossible to compete in the economy and are much more likely to resort to crime. Disparity in wealth is increasing in the US. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. That's not good news for blacks, who have been stuck in the bottom for centuries. The only solution is to reverse this vicious cycle of poverty.
