I noticed the similarity immediately. But otherwise they're quite different, so not derivative. No, I don't hear the similarity. There was the very clear similarity between At Least I have Santa and the Eagles Merry Xmas song though...that was definitively derivative.

I just don't hear it with BME and this song. It is just the choruses. Are you sure you are listening to the choruses?

I noticed the similarity immediately. But otherwise they're quite different, so not derivative. It's not just a similarity. The melodies of the choruses are almost identical, note for note. It's as if Jackie simply wrote new lyrics for her chorus and reused the melody. There were a few differences in the notes and quite a bit in their duration (the rhythm). The progression is similar, but there are enough musical reasons for that to happen that it's not copying, although possibly either subconscious or an implied reference to True Faith. There are slight similarities of lyrics insofar as True Faith involves unreality and other consequences of drug abuse, and Behind My Eyes involves unreality as a consequence of emotional trauma. So a similarity of mood (and therefore of part of the melody) to the music doesn't strike me as incredibly surprising.

If you could see behind my eyes You'd see the truth inside the lies And if you would read between the lines You'd see I'm running from my mind New Order True Faith lyrics:
I used to think that the day would never come I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun My morning sun is the drug that brings me near To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear

But I would never listen to one of these songs and think..."Hey, that sounds like the other one". Never in a million years. lol Of course, I've never heard this song before so there's that.

I think these two songs sound much more similar. Strikingly so. And not just the chorus, although that part is perhaps more obvious.
Now, I will say that I don't think Jackie is doing this deliberately...I think she's heard some of the melodies in the distant past and thinks she is coming up with them.

More that some similarity. I'm surprised at how much alike they are, nearly identical. But I agree, it probably wasn't done on purpose. I think the hardest part of songwriting would be the music, they lyrics are really easy. I just hope the writers of True Faith don't hear BME and cause a stink over it, but that song is already so old they probably wouldn't care anyway.

It must be next to impossible to write something new and unique, because you hear familiar motifs all the time peppered throughout music and across genres. It doesn't seem like a big deal – if Bob Ross wrote adult contemporary music, he would have written the same happy little melody that Jackie did.

Let us know when she gets more social media followers...thats seems to be the decider for more concerts. A video would help with her in it, it helped with River adding followers and she will up her stream totals too. She seems to be getting more airplay (from 62 plays on fri to 90 plays today, not bad) as I posted at the Hairball, so we'll see.
