For a long time, I have predicted that Jackie will not succeed in pop because she lacks songwriting and charisma. In this post, I discuss songwriting and Ed Sheeran's approach to it.
Ed's approach is summed up in the 1st 3 minutes.
Ed believes in the 10,000 hours theory: in order to be good at something, one has to first spend 10,000 hours doing it. So, at the beginning of his career, Ed wrote a million songs and did a million gigs. He said he was terrible at first but after time and hard work he became good. A singer-songwriter doesn't know what songs are good until he writes them, releases them and gets feedback from the public. But only a small percentage of songs will be good. You need to write and release a lot of songs to find the few good ones.
And therein lies Jackie's problem. Through the years, Jackie and her team have claimed that she has written lots of songs. But only in the last year has she released songs for which she has written both words and music. And then only about 5 songs. Unfortunately for Jackie, she needs to release far far more than 5 songs to get audience feedback find the few good ones.
Jackie claims that she has always wanted to write and sing her own songs. If that was really true, she should have been releasing her own songs for her entire career. She didn't need the approval of her label. In the modern era, anybody can release their own videos and post them for free on Youtube and other platforms. Grace V did it right. From early on, she already had her own Youtube channel where she posted covers and originals. When she first appeared on AGT, audiences got the opportunity to go to her Youtube channel and listen to her songs.
When Jackie appeared on Masked Singer, she had the perfect opportunity to put originals and covers on her YT channel. Especially the originals. The fact that she didn't have any originals on her YT channel suggests to me that she didn't have any originals to publish. She may have had concepts and plans and a few bits and pieces but I suspect that Jackie never wrote any real songs despite her claims to have done so.
To this day, the only original songs on her YT channel are those have have been released by Melody Place. Ed Sheeran started out with a million songs and gigs; where are Jackie's? If Jackie was serious about writing and singer her own songs, they need to be on her YT channel.

If Jackie was serious about writing and singer her own songs, they need to be on her YT channel. While I agree that TMS would have been the perfect time for Jackie to release/post her original songs, you forget that at that time, Melody place was still being run by Fred Mollin...who wasn't interested in producing/recording original songs written by non-professional song writers. It has only been very recently, in the last year or two, when Melody Place acquired new management who encouraged and supported the development of young talent, that Jackie really had the opportunity to transform her original, raw, undeveloped, unrecorded, perhaps in some many cases, unfinished songs into produced pieces. Jackie never was serious about singing her original songs to her fans/the public until she got this kind of support from her label. In October of 2022 at the Winery concert in Nashville, she sang Smoking Gun, and then remarked how brave she was to sing an original song in public and was looking to the audience to give her moral support. She clearly needed professional support from her label in order to feel confident enough to start publicly sharing any original work.

With Jackie, I don't feel the pulse and passion of an artist like I do with other artists. Maybe it's because she has been all talk and no action for so many years. There's a new album coming, so that's good. But what does she do in her spare time? Is she an artist at heart? The fact that she struggles to think of things to post on social media is telling. Artists have no problem with that, they make art and share it. We're waiting for her new album, but what is she waiting for?
"If you pour your life into songs, you want them to be heard. It's a desire to communicate. A deep desire to communicate inspires songwriting." ~ Bono
"Quantity produces quality. If you only write a few things, you're doomed." ~ Ray Bradbury

Nice song, but I still contend it sounds a lot better sped up. BOOK IT!!!! Interesting how she says she wrote Smoking Gun about two years ago and it was the first time she really thought, "Hey, I'd like to be a song writer". Sounds like it was the first time she felt motivated/encouraged to move forward with sharing some original songs...and that was about the time Melody Place changed mgmt with the stated mission of supporting young talent development.

Jackie didn't have to get permission from Fred Mollin or anybody else. She should have done what zillions of other artists do which is upload her music to her Youtube channel for free. And use a music distributor (some of whom charge very little) to upload it to the streaming services. And, of course, she needed at lot more than 5 songs. (But then, trying to break into pop music with 5 songs is a rather sad effort.) A good example is violinist Karolina Protsenko who now has 2 Youtube channels with 1.9 billion and 100 million views. She didn't get there waiting for permission from Fred Mollin.

Speaking of Karolina Protsenko, she is (like Jackie) a child prodigy musician who owes much of her success to her youth and good looks. She too will soon face the challenge of life in adulthood.

Well she's putting out some new music now, so now's the time to put some of her other new music, that she's been writing for years, on YouTube, so when people search for her, they have more new music to listen to. She can use garage band or whatever that software is called.

I think she had not learned much (although some, just learning GarageBand which she'd tried earlier) about arranging them so the accompaniment (probably all software generated) sounded professional enough to her own critical ear. Given she's got not only writer but co-producer credit, I think she has learned enough that with encouragement and people to work with (like a keyboard and guitar player at a dead minimum), that makes the difference. Maybe one day she'll get comfortable enough to release (except very rarely, like once or twice with apologies for its lack of polish) something where she did every last bit of it herself, but that's not here yet.

Speaking of Karolina Protsenko, she is (like Jackie) a child prodigy musician who owes much of her success to her youth and good looks. She too will soon face the challenge of life in adulthood. Earlier this month Karolina performed as the featured violinist with an orchestra in Palm Springs. She is in Amsterdam right now. She has not said why she went there. So far she is busy sightseeing. This was posted on March 15 - she has taken up songwriting.
