Jackie's gestures weren't "fake". She was basically conducting herself. Very genuine movements. I don't know wtf Collier is doing in that video, but it's looks really weird. lol

She has always done this. Puts on a look that doesn't match what she's singing. Waves her arms for no reason. She starts doing the scrunchy face and shoulders thing on the first note. Before you even know what the song is about she's pouring it out like Liza Minnelli either having the best sex in her life, or taking a long overdue dump after driving for miles looking for a gas station. When she was a kid she talked about her arm motions. It "adds emotion," she said. You could see her adding movements at odd times when she was very young and trying to get it right. That thing about "directing herself" was a made-up OTT thing, not her. She's done if for so long it's probably hard for her to not do it. When she sings Behind My Eyes chorus she should simply look straight ahead so the audience can see her eyes and participate in the song. How can you imagine seeing behind her eyes if you're looking at her eyelids. She closes her eyes too much. Too much of something. She's not Marylin Monroe singing happy birthday to JFK. I wish she would also talk to her audience like she talks to her sister or dad instead of putting up a barrier persona like a soap opera star reciting a memorized speech at the Oscars. Imitation. Sarah Brightman stuff. Fake.

Whe she waved her arms, often her eyes were closed and she was lost in the song. Pretty hilarious trying to claim that a shy ten year old even had the where-with-all to be "acting". She was far too focused on singing. And arms aside, she clearly has always sang with considerable emotion. Nice try, but no. lol

Allow me to take a swing at this question. Is there acting involved? Of course, but that is true for EVERY SINGER!! Stagecraft is an art in itself and it varies greatly with the genre. Different gestures communicate different things to different audiences with different expectations. Sometimes there is a least common denominator approach to things and lead to exaggerated gestures that puzzle those outside the particular audience. So opera singers look like Moses parting the Red Sea, hard rock singers look like they are battling constipation on the john, blues singers look like they just bit into a lemon sprinkled with black pepper, alt singers stretch vowels out to multiple syllables, etc.
Look at concert footage online of most popular singers and you will see them make the same moves at every concert. It's called choreography. Some are more elaborate depending on the style and the level of spectacle involved. On the one hand, a Madonna, Britney Spears, or Beyonce will be very regimented in their moves because of the dancers. While a Taylor Swift of Olivia Rodrigo are not expert dancers, there is still a level of regimentation in the sense of where onstage they must be because of costume changes, special effects, etc. If there are complex backing vocals involved, there is less freedom to improvise since everything must be timed. For smaller artists, much of it is computerized and they have so they are literally singing the same thing in the same time every night. With that little variation, they will learn gestures get the crowd's positive feedback and repeat them every night. So yes, everyone is acting onstage ... you can't help it when you are singing the same thing every night for months. The real question isn't whether they are acting but whether they are good at it.
Some of that has to do with training but another part is whether they are enjoying what they are doing out there. Even if you are doing the same thing every night, it will be more convincing if you actually like the music. It also helps if the crowd is into it. So there will always be a mix of acting and spontaneity depending upon genre, venue size, etc. So we should really be asking if Jackie is good at stagecraft and enjoys what she is singing.
I think she is perfectly capable of proper stagecraft and making it look convincing - her performances on TMS proved that to be the case. Certainly, some of it is the people working with her on the show, but I also believe the fact that the songs she was singing were songs she enjoyed had a lot to do with it. I also believe the anonymity gave her the confidence to get into the quasi-bad girl role of Kitty. Can she replicate how natural she looked then outside of that situation? I think she can on the coming tour since they will be an audience with no expectations of her being the girl in the red dress, but we will see.

I was waiting for Gen Disc #5 to open and discussions to die out. Sims pissed at anyone comparing Jackie's and her management with anyone that is out doing her career wise. Which seem to be just about everyone. He hates both Olivia Rodrigo and Grace Vanderwaal for the same reasons. Some of us has talked about Olivia and Grace before they were very popular and we were right in stating how their managers and parents do things as compared to Jackie's management.
Now there looks like there is no demand for Jackie and she needs to take what she can get. On the other hand Live Nation " The company in charge of ticket sales "' Says Olivia "Guts" tour should have had stadiums because the demand was so high.
Jackie better do something if she wants to keep up with all those so called moppets. There is a long way from being the 3rd act for a group in 300 capacity clubs than having your own show in arena's much less stadiums. Anybody thinking Jackie sticking with Mike and her current label can do it, well I have a bridge to sell you.

Jackie’s has changed, she wants a low key career! I think she realizes she isn’t a big time performer!

Jackie’s has changed, she wants a low key career! I think she realizes she isn’t a big time performer! Does Jackie want a low key career or is it she has no choice in it. Trying to make it as a singer in this cut throat profession you have to play all your cards right. Jackie doesn't know how to play the game and neither does anyone on her team. Jackie said along time ago that you can't even get venues unless you have a certain number of followers yet I haven't seen her number of followers go up.

She doesn't "want" a low key career. Her career just ran its course.

I think you're generally right about that. I'd also say that there are songs (both pop and what some view as old or stale songs, but certainly not all of either) that she's really into, that it's almost a question of whether she sings the song or the song sings itself through her; there are songs that she feels quite free to just have fun with (or even moments in something more immersive); and inevitably a few songs that more or less have to be on the set list but that she's kind of tired of. So the reaction will be different. Regular availability of choreographer not being in the budget, it's rarely going to be elaborate.
