China has proven itself untrustworthy by pouring fentanyl into our country, refusing to honor its agreements and, as the latest example, lying to us about the corona virus. ... So it would not be out of line to believe they are using tiktok to keep tabs on its users. China has certainly supplied the US with illegal drugs, but no more so than Mexico, Colombia, Central America, etc. But the root cause of the problem is the US demand for these drugs. Unsavory organizations in these countries simply responded to the US demand to make a buck, as all good businessmen would. But if Americans didn't get these drugs from China, they would simply get them from somewhere else. Death rates from Covid-19 are far lower in Korea (192), Hong Kong (4) and Singapore (6) than in the US (12,800+). Apparently China lied, but only to the US. Either that, or the US was in denial and hopelessly unprepared; it seems that optimism is not a good strategy. Tik tok could be the most popular app in the world today. And I suspect it will stay that way as long as its critics cannot come up with anything more substantial than suspicions and insinuations. Both China and Mexico are guilty of profiting from people's addiction, and that is despicable in both cases. But these are very different countries. Mexico is run by the drug cartels, whereas the Chinese government has the power to end the drug export to the U.S. tomorrow. They know the name and address of the head of the fentanyl drug trafficking and have the power to execute him at once. They do that sort of thing to political dissidents all the time. China told everyone that the virus was contained. Then they told everyone that it couldn't be transferred from human to human. They forced their doctors to lie about it, and the ones who spoke up despite conveniently disappeared -- no one has seen them since. These are not the actions of a trustworthy government. I wouldn't touch tiktok with a ten foot pole.

Those countries dealt with SARS, another disease from China, the US didn't, so they were familiar with what to do. They implemented travel bans and imposed very strict restrictions on the population.

They know the name and address of the head of the fentanyl drug trafficking and have the power to execute him at once. Do you have a source for that information? China told everyone that the virus was contained. Then they told everyone that it couldn't be transferred from human to human. They forced their doctors to lie about it, and the ones who spoke up despite conveniently disappeared -- no one has seen them since. Every epidemiologist knows that no country can guarantee containment of any new disease. And every epidemiologist knows that it is impossible to rule out person to person transmission of disease early in the process. Epidemiologists in Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore certainly didn't believe any of that. So either American epidemiologists were hopelessly incompetent, or their warnings to superiors fell on deaf ears.

Those countries dealt with SARS, another disease from China, the US didn't, so they were familiar with what to do. They implemented travel bans and imposed very strict restrictions on the population. One of the main functions of the CDC to protect America from foreign diseases. CDC cannot perform this function unless they fully understand all foreign diseases (including SARS). Also WHO was quickly involved with Covid-19 in China and passed everything they knew to health organizations all over the world. So either CDC was incompetent or their superiors were incompetent. I suspect the latter, since I believe the US has some of the best epidemiologists in the world.

At present, John Prine is on a ventilator with covid-19. Tonight on his show from home, Stephen Colbert aired this video that was posted to the internet in September 2016.

Rats, that makes me sad. I saw John Prine in the early 80's as part of a Summer concert series including people like Judy Collins, Steve Goodman, Emmylou Harris and a few others - Gordon Lightfoot I think. He told stories between songs, and the whole audience sang along with him in a way I never saw again until Billie Eilish. I remember being a little irritated by that, but now it makes me want to cry. RIP

I suspect the latter, since I believe the US has some of the best epidemiologists in the world. That is exactly what I am telling you for weeks now. They develoved the test kit here in Germany in Mid January and started testing and shared all infos about test kit for free. Btw. it was quite interesting what a german politician told who is also doctor in this field and who studied in Harvard..he told that he is still in contact with scientists from Harvard ..and they told him that they get asked by a lot of people around the world but Donald Trump no contact at all. So your own government is not using own world class expertise. And here the politics follows the advises of scientists from the beginning. There is no daily press conference of politicians but daily press conference of Robert Koch institute or e.g. the daily podcast of Christian Drosten, daily talkshows with virologists, epidemeologist as guests. Also politicians but always strictly logical, efficient. As I told you last year about my experiences with asking for help on internet USA/Germany. Very often in the USA one has to be lucky if someone reacts, helps...in Germany most of the times..5min later. If there was a stream of Emily Bear or whateever, a concert in the USA..it was more likely that I got help in Germany sbd found a solution. No chitchat, the solution is always the goal..no fight between politicians about reaction..measures. In a few hours legislation about biliions and billions.

It's really good to see this stuff from Jackie. Smiling, singing, TicToks, and she even painted her bedroom (or maybe she swapped with someone). Agreed. Lately has been the first time I have seen her appear genuinely happy in years. In the past, her rare smiles looked forced. She was probably smiling under the Kitty mask too but we missed out on it. It's nice to see her having fun again. Despite recently acknowledged context for rarity of appearing genuinely happy in years, there have been lots of unforced smiles live or with engaging interviewers, just not often on social media. A lot of people have trouble with bland or frequently pensive looking selfies. I suppose in addition to hair, makeup, clothes (which IMO Jackie does fine with; and aside from shortness, she's got quite advantageous physical appearance), one may have to intentionally prepare oneself thinking of something that causes the emotion one wishes to show, unless one is such a trained, skilled, and disciplined non-method actor that one can portray emotion without needing to feel it during the portrayal.

Lots of assertions, claims and accusations. But ZERO evidence. The US government thinks there's evidence. DoD employees are not allowed to download or use TikTok; some reports are that TSA employees aren't either, but that's not something I'd know. There has been consideration to extend that ban to ALL US government employees, although that would take legislation. There are reasons to be suspicions of ALL PRC owned tech, communications, and perhaps even shipping companies; TikTok isn't the only one. Huawei, for instance. All of them can be compelled to make any data they obtain inside or outside the PRC available to the PRC government. Some of them may even be compelled to obtain and retain data for the PRC government, although I don't know of proof for _that_; but I'm retired, so I probably shouldn't expect to.

Beachguy can be a pest, but every now and then leaves a jewel of a post. It was BG who pointed out to me (and others) that Jackie got no happy sweet sixteen birthday wishes from any of scores of people she had worked with. That was so obvious that I overlooked it. You are mistaken. Richard was the one who made that point: Richard may be considered a pest by some but he continues to make insightful posts. His latest example was when he pointed out that Mike was in LA with Christina and that his marriage with Lisa seemed to be in trouble. He made that point long before Jackie's official announcement. He sure follows very closely for one he puts down so much ...maybe he wants to smell her .
