I am just happy that the people in the crowd that had guns had the common sense not to try to fire back at a target that was far out of range of a handgun. People in the motel would probably have been hit too. You bring up a coming problem with allowing the citizenry to carry. That is, a citizen brings out their weapon to respond to some incident, probably shoots the wrong person, and in turn, is shot by another citizen who's just trying to help also. As of yet there isn't a term for that, but I'd call it "Whiteknighticide". The military calls that blue on blue. With proper training this rarely happens. To obtain a concealed weapons permit you have to go through some training.

As of yet there isn't a term for that, but I'd call it "Whiteknighticide". There have been plenty of robberies and serious assaults foiled by armed citizens, sometimes involving the discharge of the armed citizen's firearm. To my knowledge there have been no incidents like you describe. Perhaps that's why there's no term for it. FB, the actual history of the armed citizenry in the modern era of "shall issue" firearms carry permits is exemplary. Far more police are found criminally guilty of firearms misuse than private citizens. Very very few permit holders are ever charged with any crime.

No one needs an automatic weapon -- period. Unless to kill people.

No one needs an automatic weapon -- period. Unless to kill people. How d'ya think you get Swiss cheese? It started out Munster, but someone blasted it (with nice, clean, lead-free bullets). :-) But yeah, if it was me against an angry mob, I'd rather I was the one that walked away.

No one needs an automatic weapon -- period. Unless to kill people. Hi Terijay. Glad you made it over here. There are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of legal, fully automatic firearms in private ownership in the United States. I can't think of a single instance of one being used in a murder or even a lesser crime. No one needs anything other than sensible shoes either. That's no reason to prohibit Prada or even Nike. No one needs a Harley Davidson either. A sensible Honda 250 is perfectly adequate for transportation. No one needs a sports car when a sensible four door sedan will do just fine. People want what they want not necessarily the sensible minimum. I don't want people outlawing things I might enjoy, cars, motorcycles or firearms because they see no need for me to have and enjoy them.

Here are my ideas for gun control.
1) Automatic weapons and assult rifles are illegal except for the military.
2) Carrying guns in public is illegal except for the authorities. Citizens can carry their weapons unloaded only if they are going to the range or hunting.
3) Felons cannot own guns ever.
4) There should be extensive background checks of people before they can buy and own guns. For example, I have been in the psych ward so I cannot own a gun even though I am not a threat to anyone.
5) Criminals who commit a crime using a gun should get mandatory life without parole.
What do you think?
