Here are my ideas for gun control. 1) Automatic weapons and assult rifles are illegal except for the military. 2) Carrying guns in public is illegal except for the authorities. Citizens can carry their weapons unloaded only if they are going to the range or hunting. 3) Felons cannot own guns ever. 4) There should be extensive background checks of people before they can buy and own guns. For example, I have been in the psych ward so I cannot own a gun even though I am not a threat to anyone. 5) Criminals who commit a crime using a gun should get mandatory life without parole. What do you think? The only one i agree with is #4

I gave my views on gun control in a different thread but here they are again. When you apply for your social security card you would be applying for a gun permit if you want one. I believe that everyone that wants to buy or use a gun should be required to pass a background check for criminal history, mental history and citizenship. Once you pass this you should be required to pass a hunter safety test and a weapons proficiency test as most states require for a concealed weapons permit. After doing that and recieving your weapons permit card you should be able to buy, carry, and use any weapon you can afford, anywhere in the United States. It should not be up to the individual states to curtail our constitutional rights. Individual states should still be able to make rules on hunting and fishing as they are doing now however some states are doing a terrible job of that.

1] violates the second amendment.
2] assures that the only guns being carried will be those of the 'bad guys'. When the public is believed to be carrying, there are fewer armed crimes, I'm told. As far as depending upon the police, good luck with that. I'm sure they would be a help if they arrived in time, but they seldom do. When they do show up, their clipboard and chalk outlining kit are usually their tools of choice.
3] Good one. Currently the law, I believe. Many [some?] states already have laws where the commission of a crime while carrying a gun or other weapon makes for tougher sentencing.
4] Probably already on the books in some states, but what about the people who use a gun in the 'heat of the moment'? A law like this is designed to prevent carry by people who are very hard to diagnose as dangerous. If it works, great,
5] Actually, they should have all their fingers amputated, but others tell me that would be cruel and unusual [as though shooting someone is not].

What do you think? Why try to find the right formula for reducing violent gun crime by introducing stricter gun laws, when all we have to do is enact the following: 1. The most rounds a gun can fire is 10. 2. Anybody over the age of 18 can buy a gun. 3. There is a mandatory 3 day waiting period before ammunition can be purchased for the gun. 4. After the 3 day waiting period, in order to purchase ammunition for the gun, a thorough and extensive background check will be performed. 5. No one with mental health issues or with criminal records (this includes pedophilia, physical abuse of any kind, etc.), will be allowed to purchase ammunition.

GUN CONTROL IS A DEAD ISSUE , THERE ARE TONS OF RULES AN LAWS NOW NOT BEING ENFORCED BECAUSE OF THE LARGE NUMBERS OF GUNS AND GUN OWNERS WHO DON'T TRUST THE GOVERNMENT , IF KILLING CHILDREN IN SCHOOLS CHANGES NOTHING THEN THERE WILL BE LITTLE CHANGE EXCEPT FOR VOTES NEEDED BY A PARTY , LOBBY PEOPLE WITH MONEY RULE THE GOVERNMENT IN MOST ALL THINGS AND THE SOCIETY OF TODAY IS YOU BEST PROTECT YOU AND YOURS , TEACH THE DAUGHTER OF GRANDDAUGHTER TO SHOT FOR SELF SAFETY , IN OTHER WORDS LIVE WITH IT AS THINGS WILL GET WORST IN THIS COUNTRY , BOOK IT .

I believe the lobby groups are too powerful to eliminate gun ownership.....besides it is already too late. However, there are things that could be done to exercise some measure of control over acquisition and use.
Gun manufacturers in the US should be restricted to selling their products to federally licenced retailers. All serial numbers tracked from manufacture to end purchaser. Private sale of firearms is not permitted therefore the end purchaser must return his/her weapon to police for destruction and weapon record closure (no compensation should be provided to the end use owner). The manufacturer should maintain a record of final disposition as notified by police of the destruction.
Weapons must be secured by all owners and any theft must be reported to the police.
Sales of ammunition must be restricted to be transacted by licenced retailers and records of purchasers ID and serial number of weapon must be maintained.
Licensed shooting ranges may retail ammunition and all rounds purchased must be accounted for before leaving the range the sum total of discharged plus unused must equal the purchase and unused must be returned for refund.
Loaded weapons in public can only be carried by law enforcement, security personnel such as armoured car service people and other authorized government agencies having a requirement in their work environment.
I'm sure that there is other controls that could be added that still allow the purchase of a controlled weapon but restrict the use and carrying of a weapon.
In addition I do not think that foreign made weapons should be allowed into the US......for example there is no valid reason for someone to own an AK47.
Just my thoughts as an outsider looking in.

AGREE !!! this thinking is not correct for this country , no rules or laws will stop gun use in America , there are lots of reasons some people should have a AK47 and all the rest is bah bah bah , people will use things 50 times worst then a gun if they want to .

Another mass shooting in Texas today. It seems that mass shootings in the US are becoming very frequent ......almost a reversion to the old west. The last accurate stats for shootings in the US are from 2012 when 259 shootings were deemed justifiable homicides where as criminal homicides plus suicides plus accidental killings number 29,450 for the same period. IMO and I imagine the majority of citizens in the US and from outside of the US believe that the stats overwhelmingly support the need for gun control. The 2nd Amendment clearly needs to be reviewed and updated for the 21st century. It is totally irrational to hold onto an amendment that was founded in the late 1700's.

Your stats are accurate afaik. They sound right anyway. Your interpretation has a flaw that leads to incorrect analysis. For the benefit of the mathematically challenged ( ok, me) I'm going to round up your more exact 29,450 total of all shootings to 30,000. Of the grand total of homicides (where someone dies) fully two thirds are suicides. Suicides are the largest fraction of the total firearm deaths. That's a sad statistic but it reflects more on the hollowness of our society than the perniciousness of firearms. Most of the suicides by firearms are by older White males. Sad. So two thirds of the 30,000 is 20,000. That leaves 10,000. The next largest fraction of firearm deaths is gang and drug related. Crips, Bloods, Latin Kings, MS13 etc. The fraction is one fifth of the 30,000 or 6,000. That's 6,000 out of the 10,000 left after subtracting suicides. These are mostly Black and Latino males between the ages of 15 to 30-35. We now are left with 4,000 shootings (not all homicides) of which your figures say about 250 are justifiable homicides. Here is where I see a flaw your post. There are many justified shootings that are not homicides because the person shot did not die. One should not assume the remaining 3,750 shootings were not justified. Most of them were indeed justified as self defense, the person shot was not killed. I'm not saying all 3,750 were justified shootings. Many non homicide, non-justified shootings go back to the gangs/other criminals who are notoriously poor shots and indifferent to other people, including children, in the vicinity of the intended target. I'm sorry that I don't have the exact stats in front of me but if you'd like to dialogue further I will find them and list them here. If one removes the shootings, both homicide and non, perpetrated by Black and Latino males in the age group I already spoke of. The homicide rate (homicides per 100,000 people) for the U,S, is on par with that of England, Belgium and (dare I say?) Canada. Firearms are the best self defense device yet developed by man. A pistol on the nightstand has protected many an older person and young mothers from the predations of criminals.

Tis unfortunate that you were born a century and half too late. You would have fit in with the 1870's Dodge City and Tombstone very well. Fortunately most every lawless town of the old west sought a more civilized society and saw the benefit of not having people wander freely around the towns and cities carrying guns. Then came along the NRA fully supported by white supremacists, KKK, organized crime, wanna-be cowboys and the looney-toons all waving the 2nd amendment created by flintlock carrying politicians holding some fear over past dealings with the British army.

Are you Stephens next door neighbor? It almost sounds like you are getting all of your information from the same place. You definitely need to stop watching CNN and all of the rest of the lying mainstream media.
